State Lotto Draws in Australia

There are a number of lotteries in Australia that are restricted to certain states, in a similar way that state lotteries are played in the USA. The most notable of these are as follows:

New South Wales Lotto

As the name suggests, this game (generally referred to as the NSW Lotto) is played in New South Wales and also in the Australian Capital Territory. There are two draws each week – one on Monday and one on Wednesday. Players must select 6 numbers from 1 to 45 and there are five divisions of prizes as shown below.

Lotto Strike

This is a game that runs alongside the NSW Lotto, and you can only enter it if you are also entering the main NSW Lotto game. This means that Lotto Strike is only played in New South Wales and in the Australian Capital Territory. The aim Lotto Strike is for the player to select the first four numbers of the main draw in the exact same order that they will be drawn. The player can select their own numbers, and they can also choose to have the same numbers entered for every possible order of appearance – there are 24 such combinations. The jackpot starts at $100,000 and keeps growing until it reaches $2 million. At that point the jackpot is capped and an extra money is retained so that future jackpots can be topped up as required. The prize levels are as follows:

Division

How to Win

One

First 4 numbers drawn, in order

Two

Any 3 of first 4 numbers drawn, in order

Three

Any 2 of first 4 numbers drawn, in order

Four

Any 1 of the first 4 numbers drawn

Wednesday Tattslotto

This is a Tattersall’s lottery played in the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory, Tasmania and Victoria every Wednesday. It is almost identical to the main Tattslotto that is played on Saturdays, but here the player must pick six numbers from 1 to 40, rather than from 1 to 45, so the odds of winning are greater. Prizes also tend to be lower than in the Saturday Tattslotto game, and are achieved as illustrated in the table below.

Tatts 2

Tatts 2 is a lottery game operated by Tattersall’s which is played in the Australian Capital Territory, the Northern Territory, Tasmania and Victoria on a daily basis. It is one of the easiest lotteries to play and only requires players to select 2 numbers from 1 to 99. When the draw takes place, two numbers are drawn. Those who match just one number win a fixed $3. Those who match both numbers share the rest of the prize fund between them, though there is a minimum payout of $500 per winner.

Gold Lotto

Operated by Golden Casket, the Gold Lotto game is played exclusively in Queensland, Australia. It requires players to select six numbers from 1 to 45, and the draw, which takes place every Wednesday and Saturday, selects eight numbers in total – the first six are the main winning numbers and the next two are supplementary numbers. The Wednesday Gold Lotto differs from the Saturday one in that the former guarantees a fixed $1 million prize if there are one, two or three First Division winners. If there are more than three First Division winners then they all share a $3 million prize fund. If no Wednesday First Division winner is found, the prize fund is used on promotions that are offered on other divisions. The five winning divisions are show in the table below:

Cash 3

The Cash 3 game from Lotterywest is played in Western Australia on a daily basis. It requires players to select three digits (each from 0 to 9) and you can play to get all three digits in the exact same order as you mark them on your ticket or in any order. You can play for 50c or $1 per entry, and the prize breakdown is as follows:

  • Match all 3 numbers in the right order and win $500 to a $1 stake or $250 for a 50c stake.
  • Match all three numbers in any order (with three different numbers) and win $80 to a $1 stake or $40 to a 50c stake.
  • Match all three numbers in any order (with two numbers the same) and win $160 to a $1 stake or $80 to a 50c stake.
