Tattslotto

Tattslotto is an Australian lottery that has been around since 1972. It is run by Tattersall’s, which was founded in 188l by George Adams in order to introduce a public sweepstake on the Sydney Cup – one of Australia’s most prestigious horse races of the time. In 1897 Tattersall’s was given a licence by the Tasmanian State Government to operate the first government-approved lottery in the country, and when most people think of Australian lotteries, Tattslotto is invariable one of the first that springs to mind.

The modern Tattslotto game requires players to select 6 numbers from 1 to 45 to win the top Division One prize. The player can select their own numbers or use a Quick Pick option and have them selected at random at the lottery terminal. There is one draw every Saturday and the Division One prize fund is guaranteed to be worth at least $4 million for every single draw.

When the draw takes place, eight numbers are selected – six winning numbers and two “supplementary” numbers. There are five prize divisions, as follows:

Division

How to Win

Odds of Winning

First

Match all 6 winning numbers

1 in 2,036,265

Second

Match 5 winning numbers + 1 or 2 supplementary

1 in 169,689

Third

Match 5 winning numbers

1 in 9,173

Fourth

Match 4 winning numbers + 1 or 2 supplementary

1 in 184

Fifth

Match 3 winning numbers + 1 or 2 supplementary

1 in 75

Odds of winning any prize

1 in 53

Astute readers will note that the Division Two prize level can be awarded to players who match seven numbers (five winning numbers and two supplementary numbers). This is possible because Tattslotto allows players to make a “system” entry which is similar to a permutation entry in the world of football pools. To do this, the player selects anything from 7 to 20 numbers from 45 and the lottery computer automatically generates every six-number combination that those numbers allow. Obviously, the more numbers that a player chooses to enter, the more expensive their entry will be.

If no player qualifies for the Division One prize in a given draw, the prize fund is rolled over to the next draw. If a rollover occurs for four consecutive draws and the Division One prize fund is not won then that prize fund is “rolled down” to the next highest division which does have winners.

Tattslotto winners automatically receive publicity unless they “opt out” by completing an anonymity request when they initially make their claim.
