Arizona Lottery System
I recently read about an Arizona Lottery winner who, having become frustrated by the fact that his regular set of numbers always seemed to be one away from the actual winning numbers, decided to adopt a new system. What he did was take his regular numbers and write out a new line of numbers that were one away from the originals.
It took a further five years of playing this new set of numbers before Wade Hutz finally won a jackpot on Saturday 7 June, 2008, but the approach clearly paid off. In fact it paid off to the tune of $2,080,747.
I’ve ranted often enough about superstition and entering particular numbers for any regular reader to know that the odds of any one set of numbers winning the top prize in a legal lottery are exactly the same as the odds of any other set of numbers winning. But I’m not going to talk about that today. What I like about Wade Hutz is the way he turned his lottery frustration into something better.
All lottery players get frustrated from time to time. For the last three weeks I’ve had three UK Lotto Lucky Dip lines that have matched just two numbers each – always one less than I need for a minimum £10 prize. I find that frustrating. I also found it frustrating that the one time I managed to match four numbers the payout was less than average because every other Tom, Dick and Harry had managed to do the same (or so it seemed to me). Unless you win regularly, a certain amount of frustration is par for the course.
But Wade Hutz is a bit of an inspiration, because he did something about his frustration. Rather than continuing to get annoyed about his numbers always being “one away” from the actual results, he chose to change his approach, change his numbers and – as things turned out – he ended up becoming a lottery millionaire.
The fact that Wade eventually won isn’t the point here. The point is that he took the steps that were necessary to make his participation in the Arizona Lottery more enjoyable. That’s a very positive trait, and an example that all of us can choose to follow.
I’ve decided that the next time I get frustrated by my lottery results, I’m not going to sit and moan about it. I’m not even going to come on here and rant about it. Instead, I’m going to take a leaf out of Wade Hutz’s book and change my approach. I may not win a million by doing so, but I’ll certainly make myself feel better, and having fun is really what lottery participation is all about.
