Everyone Wins!

Everyone who plays National Lottery games such as the Lotto or EuroMillions benefits in a number of ways regardless of whether or not they happen to win a cash prize. This week I thought it would be a good idea to remind ourselves of the various ways in which everyone wins.

First, take a look at your local community. The chances are extremely high that there will be several projects that have been made possible thanks to the Big Lottery Fund. This is the organisation that helps to take the money raised for Good Causes and spread it around the country. Money goes ‘to community groups and to projects that improve health, education and the environment.’

Next, keep your eyes peeled when you visit the cinema. The UK Film Council distributes around £27 million of National Lottery money every year for the purpose of helping to ‘make the UK a hub and natural home for film in the digital age: a place with a diverse and vibrant film culture and a flourishing, competitive film industry.’ In other words, they help support everything from script development right through to film production and festivals.

The National Lottery helps to support both proven performers and promising newcomers in a wide range of sporting events, and this support helped the UK to win no less than 47 medals at the 2008 Olympic Games. Hopefully we will do just as well if not better when we participate in London 2012.

It is easy for lottery players – myself included – to take such ‘invisible’ lottery benefits for granted, but if we didn’t raise so much money for Good Causes through our lottery ticket purchases (over £22 billion has been raised since 1994) then the UK would be a very different place. Pausing for thought like this should put a smile on the face of everyone who plays the Lotto, because as we’ve just seen, everyone wins!
