Investing Your Lottery Fortune

Investing Your Lottery FortuneIf you are lucky enough to win a lottery fortune, you will undoubtedly want to invest a large portion of it in your future. But where should you put your money if you want it to be safe and secure? In the current economic climate, where even large banks are struggling to stay in business, this is a subject well worth serious consideration.

The first rule of thumb must be to gather as much reliable information and advice as you can from people who know the financial marketplace well. It is better to obtain specific financial advice from someone who requires payment for their services, otherwise you may well be guided towards investing your lottery fortune in whatever vehicle happens to give the advisor the greatest amount of commission.

Next, think about spreading your lottery fortune around. If you have £1 million to invest, it is probably not a good idea to deposit the whole amount with a single bank. UK law currently guarantees only £50,000 of your money should a bank go out of business, so it makes sense to have deposits with several banks just in case.

If you want to invest money in stocks and shares, be sure to do your homework. Although the stock market does tend to rise over the long term, share prices can also fall, especially in times of economic or political crisis. When this happens you will want your lottery fortune to be invested in companies that are strong enough to weather the storm. Many wise investors put only a percentage of their total wealth into stocks and shares, with the rest being put into safer, albeit less profitable investment vehicles.

Investing some of your lottery fortune in tangible items that have intrinsic value, such as property, art, gold and silver coins, and so on, can often be a good idea, but you must be aware of the fact that such tangible investments may not always increase in value. The price of silver and gold can fall as well as rise, property markets can decline, and so on. This being the case, it is a good idea to invest in tangible items that you actually derive pleasure from owning even when their value is not increasing. And, of course, it is essential to insure your investments against loss or theft.

Winning a lottery fortune is a very exciting event, and one that all Lotto players hope to experience some day. But you should be careful to avoid allowing your excitement to determine how you invest your lottery fortune. Take time out to research all of the options you have available to you, obtain reliable advice from a professional and look to investing for security just as much as you invest for growth.
