Lottery jackpot winners often put a dream holiday at the top of their shopping lists, but what type of dream holidays are most popular? Whilst some of the answers to this question will be exactly as you expect, others might be more surprising…

By reading through the stories of numerous past winners of the UK Lotto, EuroMillions, Thunderball and scratchcard games, I have concluded that there are five main types of holiday that British lottery players tend to prefer. These are:

City Breaks
Whether it’s a long weekend of shopping in New York, exploring Vatican City or enjoying a few romantic days in Paris, city breaks are extremely popular with lottery winners. One reason for this could be the fact that they are easy to slip into an existing schedule – you can hop on a plane and spend a weekend in Rome just as easily as you can spend it at home. This makes city breaks an ideal way to celebrate the lottery win that took you by surprise.

Tropical Vacations
Those winners who have time to plan ahead (or who are lucky enough to have flexible schedules right from the start) often choose to spend a few weeks in a tropical paradise. Island vacations are very popular because they give the winner the time and space required to get used to the idea of having millionaire or multi-millionaire status. It also has to be said that the good weather and luxury of tropical vacations are also quite attractive in their own right.

Exploratory Adventures
People who have always wanted to explore the pyramids of Egypt, go on safari in Africa or discover America’s famous Area 51 suddenly discover that they have the financial means to do so after winning a lottery jackpot. Such exploratory adventures vary in length, complexity and expense, but there are many winners who have used some of their lottery cash to help them make their adventurous ambitions come true.

Cruises
Lottery winners who like the idea of travelling without personally moving around a great deal tend to be attracted to cruises. Modern cruise ships boast every form of entertainment imaginable, from restaurants and bars to night clubs, casinos and cinemas, so you’ll never get bored whilst at sea. Cruises are also a very good choice for single people, as most ships stage special dances and other events that allow singles to mix easily and make new friends.

Domestic Holidays
Okay, here’s the big surprise – a high proportion of lottery winners don’t visit New York, Tahiti, Africa or take a cruise around the Caribbean. Instead, they decide to take a holiday right here in the UK. Some go even further and buy themselves a caravan or holiday cottage in their favourite location. Places like Bognor and Skegness might not be ones that most of us associate with “the millionaire lifestyle”, but they are certainly popular with a good number of Lotto winners, so maybe we ought to revise our ideas about what a jackpot destination really is.

Winning a lottery jackpot is no doubt a thrilling experience, but sitting down and imagining where you would choose to go before it has happened can be just as much fun.
