Jackpot Dreams
All lottery players have their jackpot dreams – fantasies about what they would do with their many millions should they happen to match all of the right numbers at the right time. My own jackpot dreams have evolved over the years, as the size of National Lottery jackpots has grown...
Once upon a time I was as predictable as anyone else. A big house, a few nice cars and a few holidays would have pretty much summed up my ambitions. But with jackpots creeping ever higher (the EuroMillions jackpot last week was a whopping £92,000,000) I have been able to let my imagination loose and my jackpot dreams have become more extravagant as a result.
Yes, I still want the big house, the cars and the holidays, but those things aren’t the biggest things on my shopping list by any means. So what are my top three jackpot dreams? I’m glad you asked...
1 – My Own Island
I know, it sounds a tad pretentious, but why the heck shouldn’t a lottery millionaire have their own private island if they want to? They’re not nearly as expensive as most people imagine – I could snap up a small island in the Florida Keys for around $5 million, or buy a 28 acre island in the Bahamas for $28 million. For those of us who value privacy and a pleasant view, I think either one would be a snip.
2 – My Own Plane
Next, I’d buy myself a private plane and enough lessons to be able to fly the thing solo. I’ve dabbled with flying previously, but that was with ultralights. If I won the lottery I’d be able to go the whole hog and invest in something much more powerful. And this isn’t just a selfish fantasy – I’d actually need the plane in order to get to my island, so it’s a perfectly practical idea.
3 – My Own Movie
One of my hobbies is writing screenplays, and although I’ve had a bit of success in terms of winning the odd award and being invited to meet with production companies who expressed an interest in them, none of the movies have ever been made. So, if I had £10 million or more going spare after buying the island and plane, I’d make a low-budget movie and have a go at bringing one of my stories to life. Would this merely be the realisation of a self-indulgent fantasy? Absolutely. But isn’t that what lottery jackpots are for?
I don’t think that I’m alone in developing bigger and bigger jackpot dreams, and in my opinion our ambitions will continue to swell as jackpot sizes do the same. Who knows, in a decade or two we might be dreaming about buying our own country or even securing our own moon base when our winning numbers come up. If so, my current jackpot dreams would look quite modest in comparison.
But enough about the future – I’m off to buy my Lucky Dip tickets for the next lottery draw...
