Lotteries and Recession
With the UK and many other countries in the grip of what most commentators agree will be a fierce recession, lottery games offer a glimmer of hope to players and authorised retailers alike. That’s because lotteries tend to be just as popular in a struggling economy as they are in a booming one, and there are some very good reasons for that kind of perennial popularity...
• The first reason why lotteries remain popular during economic tough times is because, when jobs are being lost and factories are closing, a single lottery ticket could still be enough to lift the lucky player to a level of financial security that is difficult to obtain in any other way. If a £5 million jackpot is valuable during the good times, it becomes even more valuable during the bad times.
• Next, lottery tickets aren’t at all expensive when compared to the cost of buying a daily newspaper, renting a DVD or paying for satellite television. When it comes to cutting back, people prefer to cut back on expenses that don’t have much upside potential and to keep their lottery ticket money – which has the potential to win them millions – so that they can continue living with a sense of optimism.
• Lottery tickets help good causes. It doesn’t matter if you buy a ticket during “boom-time or bust”, UK Lotto players contribute 28p in every £1 to good causes. Continuing to play lottery games is therefore a choice to continue giving hope to others as well as ourselves.
• Buying lottery tickets helps the general economy. Retailers who sell lottery tickets benefit from a continued stream of customers visiting their premises who will often buy other goods and services at the same time. This helps to keep the economy moving even when other retailers are struggling to attract customers.
Of course, there is more to life than playing the UK Lotto, but it’s important to understand just how much good comes from the lotteries we all know and love, as it enables us to continue playing with pleasure and, yes, perhaps even with a sense of pride. Good luck!
