Luck Streams
Ever since the media went crazy about the credit crunch and predicted a future of gloom and doom, I have been thinking about National Lottery games in a whole new way. It seems to me that people enjoy playing lotteries because they are an effective way to set up ‘luck streams’ that can, if fate deems it right to do so, enrich our lives like nothing else, regardless of the current economic difficulties.
Think about it for a moment: how many ways are there to make £1 million or more overnight? We could rob a bank, but that would be illegal and more likely to lead to a life in prison than a life of luxury. We could inherit it, but that requires having a very wealthy relative, and it’s not a very life-affirming way to get rich. We could find it in a briefcase in the street, but that’s extremely unlikely and would probably result in us constantly looking over our shoulders in case the owner shows up. Or, we could win it. And that’s where lottery games come in.
For a very modest amount of money we can buy ourselves a chance to win one million, two million, three million or even more, and we can buy ourselves as many chances as we like. Although it is true that the odds of us getting the right lottery results and winning a jackpot are small, they are much better than if we don’t buy a lottery at all. They are also much better than the odds of finding a briefcase full of cash in the street!
When we buy a lottery ticket, we are effectively creating a potential “luck stream” which the universe can use to ship vast quantities of cash into our possession extremely quickly. Trusting something as vague as “the universe” to deliver wealth isn’t the most rational way of living, but if we understand that this is just a metaphor and we don’t actually rely on luck to get us through tough times, it’s a concept that can help us to feel more positive about the future even when the media is focussed squarely on bad news.
Consider the options: would you rather not enter the lottery and have absolutely no chance of winning, or would you rather buy lottery tickets and have a tiny chance of winning?
Personally, I’d take the latter option every time. If you agree then pause to think about your potential “luck streams” the next time you buy your lottery tickets, and appreciate the fact that it is only those of us who have such streams in place who can ever possibly experience the thrill of winning.
