Winning Fantasy
A National Lottery winning fantasy is something that most players have. In the majority of cases the fantasy might include taking long, exotic holidays, saying good bye to the nine-to-five grind and enjoying the kind of freedom that only financial independence can bring.
However, for some people the winning fantasy has less to do with how they will spend their fortune and more to do with how they will break the news to the people they know and love.
This was something that I realised only recently, after talking to an old friend who plays the Lotto religiously every Wednesday and Saturday. He is a stickler for routine, and always buys the same number of Lucky Dip tickets from the same retailer on the same day or the week. He was obviously as keen to win a jackpot as any other lottery player I’ve met, so I asked him what he would do with the money if he won £5 million or more.
“Whether I win £5 million, £1 million or £50 million, the best bit will be telling my family,” he said. “Or rather, not telling them.”
Intrigued by the few words he’d tagged onto the end of his answer, I asked him to expand on what he meant, and I was surprised that he’d already got a complete scenario all figured out.
“I always check my numbers discreetly, just in case I’ve won,” he said. “If and when the day comes, I won’t breathe a word to anyone. I’ll call Camelot, arrange to go and get my cheque and then bank it in secret. Obviously I won’t be opting for any publicity. Then I’ll quit my job, but I won’t tell my wife. Instead, I’ll head off ‘to work’ as usual and use the time away from home to sort things out in secret.
“First, I’ll settle the mortgage. Then I’ll buy myself and my wife new cars, some gifts for the kids and a nice holiday for all of us. When I’ve done all of that I’ll return home and wait for the new cars to be delivered. That’s when I’ll finally break the news that we’ve won the Lotto. For me, the fantasy isn’t about the stuff I’ll buy, but more about the way I’ll be able to spring such a nice surprise on my wife and kids.”
I liked the winning fantasy that my friend described to me, and I hope that one day he gets to make his elaborate plans a reality. But what about you? Have you ever thought about how you would break the news about a lottery win to the people you live with? It’s the kind of thing you will probably only do once in a lifetime (at the most), so it makes sense to take your own lottery fantasy one step further by planning to break the news in your own unique way.
