Operating any lottery is a complicated endeavour, but when you consider the vast size of Russia (it spans no less then eleven time zones) you will appreciate just how large an undertaking Gosloto is.

As in any other country, Gosloto participants must purchase their lottery tickets from authorised retailers. Players are served across 70 regions by more than 6,000 lottery terminals, so most don’t have to travel far to get involved.

The Gosloto game itself is a 6 from 45 lottery, with the top prize going to the player or players who manage to match all six of their selections. The odds of doing this are 1 in 8,145,060. The Gosloto jackpot is a guaranteed 100 million rubles, which equates to over £2.2 million.

When the Gosloto game was first launched in October 2008, it was welcome with an enormous amount of enthusiasm. Over 7,400 tickets were sold in the first five hours, and the excitement has continued to escalate from there.

This is not the first time that Russia has used a lottery to raise funds for a major sporting event. The Soviet Union ran a Sportlotto game in the run-up to the Summer Olympic Games that were held in Moscow in 1980. The Russian government is now hoping that Gosloto will be just a useful for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games, and is expecting to raise around 30 billion rubles by 2013.
