Largest Lottery Win in Australia

The largest lottery win in Australia was achieved in the Oz Lotto game on Tuesday 30 June, 2009. The jackpot was guaranteed to be worth $90 million, but the actual value of the Division 1 prize pool was $106,549,984, and this was won by two players – one in South Australia and one in Queensland.

This record for the biggest lottery win in Australia could well stand for quite some time because the starting jackpot in the Oz Lotto game is $2 million. It would therefore take quite a few rollovers for the jackpot to better the $106 million that was won in 2009!

The jackpot in the Oz Lotto game requires players to pick 7 numbers from the range 1 to 45 and to match them all. The odds of someone doing this are 1 in 45,379,620, and those are just the odds of a player winning the Division 1 prize in any draw. The odds of someone beating the June 2009 record for the largest lottery win would obviously be even longer.

Oz Lotto isn’t the only lottery game in Australia by any means. Another very popular game is Powerball, and this requires players to pick 5 main numbers from the range 1 to 45 plus 1 Powerball number from a separate range of 1 to 45. The odds of winning the jackpot here are 1 in 54,979,156, and the biggest Powerball lottery win took place just a few weeks after the largest lottery win in Australia mentioned a moment ago – on Thursday 30 July 2009. Again, this notable jackpot win was shared between two tickets. The jackpot was worth $80 million, giving each winning ticket a value of $40 million.

Whilst lottery players in Australia would of course be happy to win any jackpot, there are plenty who dream of setting a new record for the largest lottery win of all time. And because players anywhere in the world can buy Australian lottery tickets online, there is always a small chance that the largest lottery winner in the future might not even live in Australia!
