Largest Lottery Win in Canada
The largest lottery win in Canada stands at $54,294,712, and that sum was won by a single ticket in the Lotto 6/49 game on Wednesday 26 October, 2005. The record for the biggest lottery win in Canada before this was held by the Lotto Super 7 game, which paid out a jackpot prize of $37.8 million on Friday 17 May, 2002. Although the October 2005 jackpot of $54.3 million was won by a single ticket, that ticket belonged to a 17-member syndicate in Alberta.
Whilst the record for the largest lottery win belongs to the Lotto 6/49 game, another Canadian lottery game called Lotto Max might well have beaten it were it not for the fact that it caps jackpots at $50 million. If a Lotto Max jackpot exceeds $50 million then the $50 million level is held steady and additional $1 million bonus draws are held to distribute the ‘excess’ funds. What is interesting to note here is that four consecutive draws for a $50 million Lotto Max jackpot took place from Friday 4 June, 2010, with the bonus draws increasing in number until the jackpot was eventually won.
Clearly, had the Lotto Max game not had the rule which caps jackpots at $50 million then it would certainly have smashed the Lotto 6/49 record for the largest lottery win in Canada at the end of the four week run in 2010. As things stand, if anyone asks which game created the biggest lottery win in Canada then the answer has to be Lotto 6/49. Furthermore, unless the Lotto Max game rules are revised, Lotto 6/49 is the game that is most likely to beat its own record for the largest lottery win.
The Lotto 6/49 game came close to setting a new record for the biggest lottery win in February 2009, but when the jackpot was eventually won on Saturday 21 February it stood at $50.3 million – still a few million short of the bar that had been sent in 2005.
