£1 Million EuroMillions Surprise for Shoe Shop Worker

Last Updated: Wednesday 14th May 2014, 13:27

One lucky EuroMillions player has finally claimed their £1 million prize after winning the Millionaire Raffle draw on 25th February.

Carol Jones, a 66 year old mum-of-three came from Conwy, carried the winning ticket in her handbag for more than five weeks, oblivious to its high value. She eventually came across the ticket by chance and checked it at a local retailer where she was told she would have to call Camelot to collect her winnings. However, the significance of having to ring Camelot to claim her prize didn’t register immediately and Jones headed to her job as a shoe shop assistant as normal.

"I didn't finish work until 4pm and it was only when I got home and made the call that the reality of what was happening to me started to sink in.” She said, “I can't eat or sleep properly. It's the shock - it's so much money."

Jones, who had worked as a shoe shop assistant for over 20 years, promptly quit her job and began making plans for the future. At the top of her wish list is a safari holiday followed by a countryside bungalow and flash new car, although Jones also admitted she was revealed to be rid of day-to-day budget worries.

The Welsh winner also said she would use the money to treat her three adult sons and spend more time with her husband, Harold. “The divorce is on hold!" he quipped, playfully.

Jones’ story demonstrates just how easy it is misplace tickets or forget about them altogether and countless lottery prizes go unclaimed every year as players lose, damage or forget to check their tickets. To avoid this risk, we advise players purchase their lottery tickets online as the system notifies players of a win.
