The 30 September Lotto jackpot of £1,454,780
was won by Everton fan Robert Davies, from Kirkby.
The win couldn't have come at a better time,
because Robert, who is aged 61, is on the cusp
of retirement. Now a millionaire, he's planning
to bring that cusp forward, and he's enthusiastic
about it!
"I really am over the moon!" he said
after coming forward as the jackpot winner.
"The win means I can help the family by
giving us security for the future. And after
32 years of hard graft in the building industry,
I will really be able to enjoy my retirement."
Robert bought his ticket from a Costcutter
store, and played his usual selection of numbers
based on the birthdays and ages of family members.
He was visiting his daughter with his wife when
he discovered the win.
"I was at my daughter's house watching
the lottery programme on TV when the numbers
were drawn," he said. "My lottery
ticket was in my brother Leonard's car and I
was only able to remember one of my lines. I
was checking those numbers off in my head as
I saw the five numbers come up I thought I was
dreaming. When the sixth one appeared I nearly
fell of my chair!
"I phoned Leonard and asked him to check
the numbers and bring the ticket over. I could
not believe it until I had it in my hand and
could see it for myself. I didn't want to put
the ticket down. I was scared of losing it."
Apart from taking early retirement, Robert
plans to visit the USA. He also wants to buy
a new home, but he doesn't want to leave the
area. If the research of Dr Richard Tunney of
the University of Nottingham is anything to
go by, Robert's desire to remain in the area
could well ensure his long term happiness. This
is because lottery jackpot winners who stay
in close proximity to friends and family tend
to report greater feelings of happiness than
those who move away to a totally new area.
