Lottery Funding to Restore churches

A plan put forward by the English Heritage and Heritage Lottery fund is to provide more than £15 million to support urgent restoration work to 154 listed buildings across England. Many of these buildings are churches, temples and synagogues but the grants won’t only pay for the repaid work but will also help these buildings find new roles in the community.

The grants will allow these buildings, that have fallen into disrepair through lack of use to be restored to their former glory and then help the buildings find a new role in the community such as Post Offices, crèches or exhibition space.

The cash adds to the £123 million of grants paid out by the Heritage Lottery fund for good causes, just since 2002 to over 1,000 historic buildings and places of worship. This years £15.7 million grant will mostly go towards Anglican churches but there are some provisions for churches from other faiths.

The plan is to make places of worship  even more useful and accessible to the whole community and by doing so making the buildings they are held in, something for that said community to be proud of.
