People's Million Finalists

The People’s Million Lottery Giveaway is just weeks away from awarding one of four projects a lottery grant of £50 million. The competition was first announced way back in June 2005 by the Big Lottery Fund, and initially there were 33 entries. The bids from those projects were assessed and the list of entrants whittled down to just 13.
Then, in August 2006, six projects were given development grants so that they could make some progress in preparation for the final. The four projects that were named in October 2007 as the finalists were as follows:
This is a nationwide project which intends to create new walking and cycling routes in 79 communities. The Connect2 project will involve the construction of new bridges and crossings and the aim is to make local travel in these communities easier, faster and more enjoyable. Connect2 say that some six million people in the UK live within a mile of one of their planned projects.
The Eden Project in Cornwall want the £50 million grant for The Edge, which is basically a plan to involve the community in discussing how to improve “their lives and surroundings” as well as understand how people have coped with changing environmental conditions in the past. A major component of The Edge is the planned erection a new building where people can gather and share their ideas.
Sherwood: the Living Legend is a project that seeks to give the famous Sherwood Forest a makeover, arresting the damage that industrialisation has already done and ensuring that it not only survives but thrives for future generations. A key part of this project is building a visitor centre known as “The Tree” using sustainable technology.
The Black Country project is concerned with residents of the same making over their environment so that they can enjoy happier lives and ensure that future generations are able to do the same. Attracting visitors to the area will play a big role, and plans include opening a man-made network of underground limestone caverns and canals that most people aren’t even aware of.
The ultimate winner of The People’s £50 Million Lottery Giveaway will be determined by public vote. Voting is open from 26 November, and the winning project will be announced in December 2007 on ITV.
