Powys Weekly Grand

Last Updated: Wednesday 23rd June 2010, 12:23

Scratchcard A National Lottery player in Powys, Wales has hit the top Weekly Grand scratchcard prize of £1,000 a week for a whole year. Rhys Ap Dafydd, who is from Machynlleth and has four children, is now planning to marry his partner Elaine Griffiths.

Rhys and Elaine had planned to marry earlier (they have been engaged for two years), but when Rhys was unexpectedly made redundant, those plans had to be put on hold. Winning the Weekly Grand prize now means that the big day can finally go ahead, and the couple intend to marry in November at the Plas Talgarth Health & Leisure Club, which is set in acres of parkland in the Snowdonia National Park.

Weekly Grand is currently one of the most popular National Lottery scratchcards, and Rhys bought his lucky ticket from the Spar store in the historic market town of Machynlleth. Winning the top prize couldn’t have happened at a better time for him.

“Since getting engaged we have been desperately trying to get married, but for one reason or another the money just wasn’t there to do it,” Rhys explained. “When I first realised I had hit the top prize I couldn’t believe it. It slowly dawned on us that we could now get married and we have already booked our dream wedding for 10 weeks time.

“It’s so important to me that Elaine, the children and all our guests have the perfect day,” Rhys continued, “and the money that we have won will not only make sure that this can happen, but it also means we can enjoy life and have a great Christmas.”
