Club Syndicate Lands Jackpot

Last Updated: Wednesday 23rd September 2020, 14:36

A syndicate of fourteen lottery players who are all members of the same social club in Ellesmere Port is celebrating after landing a Lotto jackpot worth £2,283,989 on Saturday 13 December, 2008.

The syndicate, which is based at St Saviours Social Club, has been playing lottery games for three years, and this is its first (though not necessarily its last) jackpot win.

The syndicate didn’t discover the jackpot win until it checked the lottery results the Tuesday after the draw. Syndicate member Michael Griffiths, who is 40 years of age, found about the win when he received a phone call shortly afterwards.

“When I was called and told that we had won, like the others, I just couldn’t believe it,” he explained. “... the win will really make a big difference to our lives.”

Because the jackpot win came less than two weeks before Christmas, the first order of business for syndicate members was to make sure that Christmas 2008 was as enjoyable as possible. Now that the festive season is over, the syndicate members are drawing up their personal shopping lists, and holidays, new cars and treats for loved ones are all proving popular.

The club members have long enjoyed going out for a day at the races, so it’s no surprise that an extra special trip is also on the cards. “In the New Year, no doubt we’ll organise a special day out or weekend away to the races to celebrate our win together,” Michael said.
