Support Centre loses lottery funding

Last Updated: Thursday 24th September 2020, 15:59

A support centre in Lancashire is in financial trouble after losing its lottery funding for next year. The STAR Centre offers support and advice to victims of domestic abuse but they have just been told that they will not receive any cash from the Big Lottery Fund in 2010.

It’s a huge blow for the charity whos future is now in doubt after the withdrawal of funds. The centre has seen a 45% increase in users in the last two years but is now looking at having to reduce some of its services.

The main funding for the charity was a grant from the Big Lottery Fund for good causes but the withdrawal of these funds has left the project in it’s worse financial state ever.

Without cash from the sale of lottery tickets, the charity is now  looking for funding from smaller bodies to ensure they now survive into the new year. A small grant would enable them to continue their work to help victims of forced marriages, abuse by same sex partners and family members at least until March next year. It is then hoped that the charity can find a bigger source of charitable funds after that.

The organization has already hat to withdraw its counseling service and this reduction of funds could mean that other services are affected. We often hear about lottery grants for charities but it’s not very often we hear what happens once the money runs out. The Big Lottery Fund has many charities it supports and this does change often, leaving many charities in the same place as the STAR Centre is now.
