Go Green with Lottery Grants

Last Updated: Friday 25th September 2020, 15:16

A bunch of green fingered pensioners are able to join forces and grow their own vegetables thanks to a grant from the National Lottery. The friends from South Shields are celebrating after being awarded a £5,200 lotto grant at the end of last year to set up the green venture.

Friends Pat Wheat and Jean Briggs with the help of a neighbour applied for the lottery grant for good causes and now run the scheme together. The project is known as the Cragside Part two Community Garden.

The scheme is so called as there is already a Cragside Community Garden which is very popular, growing flowers. But the group wanted to grow their own produce so applied for the grant and were over the moon to get it.

It’s just a small group and they share a communal garden, now they grow every kind of vegetables and their greenhouse is packed full of fruit bushes and flowers.

They grow enough produce that none of the group need to buy any vegetables anymore and  if they grow too much they simply give it to friends and family who make a small donation towards the next years seeds.

It makes a great hobby for the group and this help from the National Lottery, paid for with your lottery tickets means they now don’t have to make so many trips to the supermarket and have delicious free produce to eat and share with their friends. The group are now looking for volunteers and this start up grant means the garden can now grow and grow!
