Lottery Funding for Theatres

Last Updated: Friday 25th September 2020, 15:17

Stage Groups from around the UK are being encouraged to bid for lottery funding for theatres from a £5 million pot established by the Heritage Lottery fund. The lottery cash would enable them to host trainees within conservation schemes and engage the public with the history of the actual theatre building, conservation and upkeep.

Theatre venues will be able to apply for lottery funding from November over a five year period to pay for traineeships through the Skills for the Future programme set up through lottery funding for good causes.

The criteria and priorities for the placements of the lottery cash are still being developed by the Heritage Lottery Fund but it is understood that the emphasis for grants will be on practical work-based training.

The lottery grants would allow people who are interested in the restoration of theatres around the UK a chance to host trainees within the theatre building and develop the skills they need to look at the specialist aspect of heritage theatre.

The new £5 million lottery programme is very exciting and should be used to give people vital skills to move up through the theatre system learning about theatre architecture and maybe even become historians in their own right, then passing on those important theatre conservation skills to the next generation keep old theatres alive throughout the UK.

It’s just another way that the cash from your lottery tickets is going to improve the lives of people and organisations throughout the UK.
