Lottery Win Likelier Than Mugging

Last Updated: Thursday 7th July 2011, 16:29

Lottery Pounds A police authority from Essex may be left with egg on his face after making the outrageous claim that people in the county have more chance of winning the lottery than being mugged. Robert Chambers, chairman of Essex Police Authority made the claim, praising the safety of his force as he introduced Essex’ new chief constable, Jim Barker-McCardle.

Essex police could not support his statement but a quick look at crime figures for the county show that there were almost 300 robberies reported in the area in the last quarter, making almost 100 robberies per month.

Now according to National Lottery statistics there have only been two jackpot winners in Essex since the start of 2008, and although that figure doesn’t include any anonymous winners it’s a long way off the figure reported by Essex police for crime in the area. In fact even when you consider that one of the winning lottery tickets was purchased by a nine strong syndicate, that still only makes ten lottery winners in Essex in over 18 months.

Mr Chambers however, insisted that his statement was fact that you are more likely to win the lottery than you are to get mugged in Essex.

I’m sure everyone would like to live in the Essex that Mr Chambers imagines and if we did, I’m sure we’d all be buying lottery tickets too.

If you are wondering where the best place to live in if you play the National Lottery is, then we can tell you now that Perthshire is the luckiest lottery place in the UK, boasting more winners per square mile that any other area.
