Castle to be repaired with lottery cash

£700,000 of Heritage Lottery Fund money will be used to make safe, then restore the Bishop’s Palace and Keep at Farnham Castle in Surry. The historic building is in desperate need of restoration work before it becomes a safety hazard and too expensive to repair. The castle is to be repaired with National Lottery cash in a move which will also bring the entire site under a single management team.
The Bishop’s Palace and Keep are an important part of British history, being one of the few remaining medieval houses left standing. The Castle itself was built in 1138 by the grandson of Duke William of Norman who is better known as William the Conqueror. Over the years Farnham Castle has been home to many monarchs including Queen Victoria and more recently saw the Bishop of Winchester use it as both a home and office.
Funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund have already been awarded and as of next month the work will commence at this historical building. Up until the awarding of the much needed National Lottery cash the future of Farnham Castle was in question. The walls of the Bishop’s Palace at Farnham Castle urgently require repair as they are becoming dangerous but thankfully the lottery cash handout has come just in time.
Once again the Heritage Lottery Fund has come to the rescue of another British Historical building, like it has many times previously.
