Lottery Grant for Dylan Thomas Park

Last Updated: Thursday 24th September 2020, 15:50

A Lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery fund is to upgrade and revamp a park in Swansea made famous by Dylan Thomas, one of Wales’ greatest poets. Cwmdonkin Park, Swansea was made famous by the poet, after being one of his favourite parks as a child.

In later years Dylan wrote that he and his gang of friends played “as innocent of strawberries” in the park and now thanks to a UK Lotto grant, children and adults alike will be able to enjoy the park for future generations.

Cwmdonkin Park is a traditional municipal park in the Swansea Uplands area, overlooking Swansea bay and is now up for a major revamp thanks to the sale of lottery tickets around the UK.

The park will receive almost £20,000 of lotto cash after the local council was successful in the first stage of a Heritage Lottery grant application and that cash will allow the park to be upgraded while still keeping its historical value.

The plans for Dylan’s favourite park – where he described getting lost in its “Jungly regions” – will now be resubmitted in the hope of a further lottery grant of almost three quarters of a million.

It is hoped that the park will be restored in time to mark one hundred years since Dylan’s birth in 2014.

Ideas for the lottery cash from good causes include upgrading fencing and footpaths and the introduction of new seating to improve the outstanding views towards Mumbles.

This of course is just one of the many ways that cash from your lottery tickets is going to upgrade and improve services and amenities around the UK.
