Charles Dickens birthplace to get Lottery cash

Last Updated: Thursday 24th September 2020, 15:57

A Cash windfall from the Heritage Lottery fund is to enable a project in Portsmouth to discover how life was at the time of Charles Dickens birth in the city. The £270,000 of lottery cash is to fund the Dickens Community Archive project which will mark the 2012 bicentenary of the author’s birth.

The community project will enlist up to one thousand local residents to take part in the project, the project will research and chronicle life in Portsmouth during Dickens era and compare it with life in modern Portsmouth today.

The lottery project from the fund for good causes will be based at the Dickens Birthplace museum in the house where Dickens was born, it will cover themes such as childhood and education and will be funded from cash from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Don’t worry if you’re not from the Portsmouth area as this project has something for everyone. The archive, once completed will go online and many volunteers will act as costumed guides and dramatic readers at the Dickens Birthplace museum.

The project itself will be run by cash from the sale of lottery tickets and will be run, once complete by Portsmouth City Council’s Museums and Records services.

This is just the first of the New Year lottery projects of which there are sure to be many over the next twelve months. Dreams coming true and communities being helped all over the UK by the sale of lottery tickets and money for good causes.
