Lottery scheme for Stonehenge to go ahead

Last Updated: Wednesday 5th January 2011, 11:09

Lottery BallsWhen the coalition came into power, it looked as though ambitious lottery funded projects such as the Stonehenge visitors centre may be curtailed but in a piece of lottery news released today it’s been announced that a lottery grant will hand over £10 million to the project. The lottery backing, now it’s definitely back on will take Stonehenge one step closer to its new £27 million visitors centre after huge doubt earlier this year.

Originally the Heritage Lottery Fund promised £5 million to the Stonehenge visitors centre, a promise that was thrown into doubt when the coalition government came into power earlier this year. However now the Heritage Lottery Fund from the National Lottery has promised a massive £10 million towards the £27 million needed, giving the project a real boost.

While not wanting to detract from the mysticism of the stones, the Stonehenge visitors centre will not actually be based at the site of the stones, but around a mile and a half away. The centre will contain exhibition and education facilities, a cafeteria and gift shop and would hopefully serve visitors to the ancient stones for years to come.

This is just one way your lottery cash is helping good causes all over the UK. Knowing that 28p from every single lottery ticket sold in the UK goes to good causes around the UK is a great reason to buy lottery tickets, the £4.4 million jackpot on offer tonight is 4 million good reasons!
