Stonehenge funding axed

Last Updated: Thursday 24th September 2020, 15:03

A few months ago we brought you news that the Heritage Lottery Fund was donating millions to English Heritage to build a visitors centre at Stonehenge. Another £10 million was to come from the government and private sources but the change of government and the mess of the countries has meant that the government funding for the Stonehenge visitors centre has been axed.

The issues haven’t come from the Heritage Lottery fund for good causes who are still happy to have their donation used if English Heritage can come up with the rest of the funding but the axing of government money for the fund is going to make it almost impossible to make the dream a reality right now.

Stonehenge is the world’s premier Heritage site and is right up there with monuments such as the Sphinx in Egypt and other historical sites. Yet the government has a £2 billion deficit to fill and unfortunately that is going to mean that many of Labour’s promises are to be broken by the new government as they tackle Labour’s overspending.

Hopefully the lack of money will just mean a delay for the site and pretty soon the visitors centre will be on the agenda again. It’s a likely place for lottery cash to go to and seems a perfect project for the Heritage Lottery Fund. You don’t get much more heritage than Stonehenge, although for now Wiltshire council are saddened by the decision.

As for the lottery funding, well millions goes into the fund for good causes every week and millions is paid out in lottery grants, made possible every time you buy lottery tickets!
