Rule change for National Lottery

Last Updated: Friday 8th April 2011, 13:01

Lottery RolloverThe UK Lotto has been going through quite a lot of changes of late. Of course, with brand new owners this was always expected and all of the changes so far have been for the better. Later this month we see the start of the Lotto Plus 5 draw from the National Lottery and now a rule change for the main Lotto draw means you could end up winning even more money! The new rule concerns lottery rollovers and brings the UK Lotto somewhat in line with other draws around the world.

When the National Lottery launched in 1994, the UK had never seen anything like it and the idea of winning a million was of great excitement to us all. However, there were concerns that if not won, the Lotto would roll over until the jackpot was too high for one person to win and so the rollover limit was capped to three. That meant if the National Lottery rolled over twice, it had to be won on the third draw or it rolled down to lower division winners.

Of course with Euromillions jackpots exceeding €100 million, this rule on the National Lottery has seemed outdated for quite a while now and while the National Lottery isn’t scrapping it completely, they are stretching it out for another draw.

So now, instead of the Lotto capped at a triple rollover, buying lottery tickets in the UK could mean you could see some quadruple rollover jackpots! It looks like it’s time to break a new Lotto record!
