Lottery funds sport for women

Last Updated: Thursday 24th September 2020, 12:44

Last week, Sport England released a statement to say that they had received a massive £10 million lottery grant, designed to get more women playing sports. The lottery grant will enable around twenty projects to be launched in the UK to bring women up to the same sporting standard as men. Lately, especially with the lottery Olympic involvement, sport and keeping fit have been top of the agenda and it seems that ethos is set to continue into the New Year.

Figures show that just one in eight women take part in regular sporting activities in the UK, much lower than the male figure of one in five. It is hoped that within five years, this lottery money will have made a notable difference.

The government minister for Sports and Olympics warmly welcomed Thursday’s announcement by Sport England, who hope that this initiative will create more professional women athletes in the UK. It just shows how lottery money can make such a difference to the lives of so many people and we’ll be following this lottery project with great interest, look out for it on our lottery news pages.

For a long time now, the UK’s sporting ability has not come up to scratch with the rest of the world, but the Olympics and the many lottery-based projects may just put pay to that. It could end up that a young person taking advantage of a lottery project, could end up being a gold medal winner and that would be thanks to you and the lottery tickets you buy!
