Irish Lottery License Granted to An Post and Camelot Consortium

Last Updated: Monday 2nd February 2015, 09:12

It has been confirmed that the license to run the Irish Lottery for the next 20 years has been granted to a consortium including An Post and Camelot in a deal worth €405 million. The consortium beat off fierce competition from gaming groups around the world including the Australian gaming company Tatts Group, who run a range of Australian national lotteries.

The consortium, officially known as Premier Lotteries Ireland, won the bid this week and is expected to officially seal the deal in December with the new licence coming into effect next October.

Camelot, who have run the UK National Lottery since 1994 and An Post, who have been the sole operator of the Irish Lottery for the last 26 years, were confirmed as being the preferred operator after Public Expenditure Minister Brendan Howlin said they “had met the Essential Requirements and submitted the highest License Fee proposed.”

The consortium agreed to several new licensing terms, including boosting the annual contribution to the Good Causes fund to 65% and freezing retailer commission rates.

Mr Howlin has said the money raised from the license award will go towards building a new children’s hospital at a site at St James, Dublin city.
