Lottery Award to Help Blind People Learn IT Skills

Last Updated: Friday 26th September 2014, 09:39

A Big Lottery Fund grant of £5.8 million has been awarded to the Royal National Institute for Blind People’s Online Today! project which aims to provide training in online and technological skills for people with visual or hearing impairments. The grant comes from money raised through National Lottery ticket sales, with 28p from every £1 being set aside for good causes.

The RNIB is the first charity to benefit from the Big Lottery Fund’s £15 million kitty to tackle the skills gap and ensure that particular groups are not excluded from digital technology. Online Today! will use the RNIB and partner charities’ existing networks to reach 125,000 people with hearing or sight loss and offer them advice on accessible technology as well as providing surgeries and an advice line.

With internet access an ever more important aspect of modern life, the project hopes to bolster users’ confidence when accessing online facilities that aid their ability to live independently, complete household tasks like shopping and paying bills and assist with searching for employment.

By playing Lotto and EuroMillions, a proportion of the money you spend helps these groups and many more across the United Kingdom whilst also giving you the chance to win life-changing sums of cash for yourself! EuroMillions tickets are on sale now for tonight’s draw which boasts a jackpot of £20 million and you can buy them online or from an authorised retailer, helping to contribute to the £33 million a week raised in the UK by the National Lottery for good causes.
