Family Dogs Help Couple Double Their EuroMillions Win

Last Updated: Thursday 24th September 2020, 14:18

A couple from the Isle of Wight have their dogs to thank for doubling their £149,089 EuroMillions win, after their labrador retriever and border collie uncovered a duplicate ticket. Jane and Alan Slater were already celebrating having matched five main numbers and a Lucky Star in the draw on Tuesday 29th September when Ruby and Kai hopped into the car after a walk and disturbed a catalogue in which the second ticket had been secured.

The Slaters had played the same lottery numbers for 20 years in a selection of different draws and Alan, 65, had bought a EuroMillions entry, not realising Jane had already done the same. Alan will now retire from his job at Wightlink Ferries earlier than previously planned and Kai and Ruby, on whose second birthday the second ticket was found, will receive some extra treats.

According to the BBC, Jane described the moment the dogs uncovered the second slip: “I really can't explain the way this piece of paper floated, it was like you see in slow motion in films, as though someone wanted me to notice it." The couple checked it, realised it contained the same numbers as their original ticket and, according to Alan, both burst into tears.

There were five winners in the Match 5+1 prize tier on the night, four of whom were from the UK and two of whom were the Slaters! A way to avoid the issues of accidentally buying duplicate lottery entries is to get hold of them online.

EuroMillions returns tonight with a jackpot worth £11 million (€15 million), ahead of tomorrow evening’s £12.1 million Lotto draw. You can buy lottery tickets for both games online or from authorised retailers. Good luck!
