Cornwall Running Syndicate Races To £1 Million Win

Last Updated: Thursday 24th September 2020, 14:16

As the clock ticks down for a number of big National Lottery prizes to be claimed, a syndicate of marathon runners has shown how important it is to double-check tickets and look at the winning codes as well as winning numbers, after nearly missing out on a £1 million windfall.

The Mount’s Bay Harriers syndicate, from Penzance in Cornwall, bought 13 EuroMillions tickets for the draw on 14th October after group leader Nicky Morse had a ‘lucky feeling’. They went away for a weekend of running in Amsterdam and initially thought they had won nothing when they saw which numbers had been drawn in the main game.

However, Nicky and his wife Jackie took the tickets home for a closer inspection and discovered that they had matched one of the two winning UK Millionaire Maker codes, netting each member of the group £76,923. Nicky told National Lottery officials: “Everyone will be doing something different with their share. Some are going to pay off their mortgages, there are a few holidays being booked and I’m planning some home improvements.”

There are millions of pounds worth of prizes that go unclaimed every year, either because players lose their tickets, forget about them or simply do not check every part of the slip to see if they have won. The unclaimed lottery prizes page shows the major awards that have not yet been collected, and many of them are from Lotto Millionaire Raffle and Millionaire Maker.

A random code is generated alongside every line of numbers in both Lotto and EuroMillions, which can be worth up to £1 million in Lotto Millionaire Raffle and Millionaire Maker. You can use the National Lottery Checker to find out whether you are owed any prizes, and all prizes must then be claimed within 180 days of the draw taking place.

There will be two guaranteed prizes of £1 million given away again in tomorrow night’s EuroMillions, when the jackpot will also stand at £33 million. The Lotto jackpot for Saturday is £5.6 million following a rollover last night, and there will be one prize worth £1 million and a further 20 prizes of £20,000 available in the Lotto Raffle.

You can play either Lotto or EuroMillions now, by either visiting an authorised retailer or entering online. If you go to a retailer, just remember to double-check those tickets for the winning codes, and you could just find that you have run into some good fortune like the syndicate from Penzance. Good luck!
