Family Syndicate Claims £61.1 Million EuroMillions Jackpot

Last Updated: Wednesday 3rd August 2016, 16:35

A family syndicate have come forward to collect a EuroMillions jackpot of more than £61.1 million. The Davies family from Monmouthshire, Wales, consisting of Sonia Davies, Stephanie Davies, Courtney Davies, Keith Reynolds and Stephanie's partner Steve Powell, successfully matched the numbers 1, 21, 26, 40 and 50, as well as Lucky Stars 2 and 4 to get their hands on the mightily impressive eight-figure sum.

This latest win continues a fine run of form for UK EuroMillions players following three other jackpot wins since the start of the year. Top prizes of £24.7 million and £24.6 million were pocketed in February before a colossal £51.8 million was scooped by a lucky ticket holder in April; all were claimed anonymously. Speaking at a National Lottery press conference, a spokesman for the company described this latest victory as “an amazing win for the UK” before going on to state: “We’re delighted the ticket-holder has come forward to claim their prize and their ranking of 10th place in the National Lottery rich list.”

Sonia told reporters that she had undergone an operation in Florida to remove a tumour just two days before the draw and, having been given the all clear, she and Keith felt they were on a lucky streak. They rang daughter Stephanie at home and asked her to play the line that would go on to make them all millionaires. "I thought mum was mad calling me from holiday," she recalled, "but they were so insistent I knew we had to do it."

The largest EuroMillions prize ever to be claimed by a British ticket holder was a £161.6 million jackpot. The massive sum was scooped by Colin and Chris Weir of Largs, North Ayrshire, in July 2011. The latest big money winners may not have been able to match the Weir’s achievement, but with a sum of £61.1 million in the bank, they may have become the largest syndicate winners in UK EuroMillions history. The record had previously been held by a collective of seven office workers from Merseyside, delightfully dubbed ‘the Magnificent Seven’ who claimed half of a £91 million jackpot in November 2009.
