National Lottery Awards to Celebrate Worthy Causes

Last Updated: Thursday 24th September 2020, 11:03

At a time when Lotto players might be considering the future of the UK economy following the decision to leave the European Union, the money raised from ticket sales is continuing to go towards worthy projects across the country. The National Lottery Awards will soon announce the country’s favourite lottery-funded projects from seven different categories, and some of the shortlisted entries have been expressing their gratitude as they seek greater recognition from the public.

The public will be able to vote until 20th July in the categories of arts, education, environment, health, heritage, sport and voluntary, and each winning project will receive a cash prize of £3,000. Sea Sanctuary, a Penryn-based charity which uses sailing as a form of therapy to help vulnerable people, is in contention to win the health category.

The organisation's chief executive, Joseph Sabien, said in the Falmouth Packet: “It’s absolutely amazing to reach the finals of the National Lottery Awards, and it’s humbling to have been chosen from so many great projects. Sea Sanctuary offers a fantastic service for people experiencing mental health problems, offering a real departure from over-reliance on drugs and having to receive treatment in clinical and often sterile environments.”

The Hertfordshire Wildlife Trust is another project which has been noted for its good work, having launched the WildPlay scheme to help establish more urban green spaces in socially deprived areas and get children involved in various activities. Joanna Dainty, from the Trust, said in the Kidderminster Shuttle: “We’re delighted that the life-changing impact of our work has been recognised in this way.”

The Good Causes Fund uses 28p from every £1 spent on lottery tickets to help projects such as Sea Sanctuary, the Hertfordshire Wildlife Trust and many more. Such groups would not be able to flourish and benefit others in the way that they have without lottery funding, so anyone who buys a ticket can take heart from knowing that they are doing their bit to support others.

You can buy tickets now, either online or from authorised retailers in the UK, whether you love Lotto, Thunderball or EuroMillions. Good luck!
