Lotto Winner Buys Lucky Dip on Way to Pick Up £6.1 Million

Last Updated: Wednesday 25th May 2016, 13:48

The winner of Wednesday 18th May’s £6.1 million Lotto jackpot stopped in at his local newsagent to buy a Lucky Dip for tonight’s draw on the way to receive his seven-figure winnings! Kevin Jones of Crewe attended a press conference this morning with his wife Michele where he revealed he had also played a prank on the woman behind the counter at the newsagent.

Kevin told the assembled media, “when I went to buy my local paper and my Lucky Dip for today I said to the attendant in the shop 'hasn’t somebody in Crewe won this recently?' and she said 'yes, some bus driver'. I said 'do you know him?' and she said ‘no I don’t' and I said ‘It’s me'. She said ‘Yeah, I wish' and I said ‘It is' and I walked out. The look on her face of disbelief was incredible."

The bus driver said his first purchases had been two Everton FC season tickets for him and his son, something he could never take advantage of previously due to weekend work commitments. He also told reporters he and his wife had already decided on their dream house and would use some of their winnings to look after their two grown-up children and five-year-old grandson.

Kevin revealed he and his wife had returned to England following a period abroad in Spain, where two burglaries at their home in one weekend meant they had “lost everything”. He recounted how the pair drove back home to start all over again, often working 12-hour days to pay the bills. Happily, Kevin will now hand in his notice at his bus driving job and plans for him and Michele to “live the life of our dreams.”

He told the press he found out he had won by using an online Lotto checker, but went to work the next morning as the couple awaited official confirmation of the win. At the end of his route, he received a call from Michele telling him the award had been validated, but he still needed to make the return journey.  "I tried to remain calm,” he recalled, “I knew I had to drive the bus back to Crewe and look after all of my passengers."

For your chance to change your life forever, you can buy Lotto tickets online and from authorised retailers for tonight’s £6 million draw. Like Kevin, you should also use the Lotto Checker soon after the draw takes place and you could be popping the champagne corks and scouting out a new luxury mansion before the weekend!
