Boss with gambling habit stole lottery cash

A WHSmith’s boss, stole thousands in lottery cash to fund her lavish lifestyle and gambling habit a court heard this week. Kezia Hopkinson from Swanage admitted the theft of lottery tickets and fake refunds totally over £20,000 from the WHSmith’s while she was manager of their premises. In fact, the theft and deception had got so out of hand, that it was the unusually high payouts of lottery payouts that had alerted the company to the deception.
The unusually high payout of lottery winnings from the store causes WHSmith’s to fit a covert camera to the till and the office. When the footage was watched back it was clearly seen that Miss Hopkinson was putting through fake lottery wins and pocketing the cash.
In her defence Miss Hopkinson said that she was £12,000 in debt and spun much of the winnings away on slot machines. However, the stealing was as habit forming as the gambling, with Miss Hopkinson saying she couldn’t help herself.
Now the shame-faced shop manager has been given a suspended sentence and other supervisions by the court and it’s unlikely she will be employed as a manager anywhere again.
