Syndicate Scratchcard Win
Last Updated: Thursday 29th January 2009, 09:45 am
A lottery syndicate of workers at the head office of supermarket chain Morrisons in Bradford has won the top prize offered by the Scrabble 2008 scratchcard from the National Lottery. The prize, which was worth £75,000, has given the syndicate just as many reasons to celebrate.
The syndicate of twenty-five plays the lottery every week but doesn’t usually make a habit of playing scratchcards. After the game had been played, syndicate members passed it around among themselves, hardly daring to believe that they had really won the top prize until syndicate leader Julia Moorhouse obtained confirmation from official lottery sources.
Julia explained what happened: “We play Lotto each week and any prizes won over the year are shared out in December. We had some prize money left over after we’d shared it out so we decided to buy some scratchcards and picked the Scrabble version so that we could all scratch a square off. Little did I know that we had bought a winning card!
“The scratchcard hadn’t got very far around the syndicate when we realised that we had won,” Julia continued. “We are over the moon to have struck lucky! We’ve not won a life-changing amount, but it will make all our lives much easier. We’re all planning to celebrate together soon and then look forward to treating ourselves!”
The treats that Julia is referring to take various forms, but popular shopping list items include driving lessons, house renovations and summer holidays – all things that will make 2009 a memorable year for the winners even if they don’t happen to win another penny.
Amazingly, the scratchcard game that gave the Morrisons syndicate a prize of £75,000 was bought at a Morrisons supermarket. Clearly, loyalty to your employer can have its benefits!
