Lotto Must Be Won draws are special events in which the jackpot can roll down if nobody matches all six main numbers. The jackpot is guaranteed to be given away, so prize amounts can be larger than normal for hundreds of thousands of players at a time. Find out more about Lotto rolldowns and Must Be Won draws.

To date, there have been 106 'Must Be Won' Lotto draws where the advertised jackpot amount was guaranteed to be won on the night, either by players matching all six numbers or by the funds rolling down across other cash prize tiers. You can see the details of all Must Be Won draws, starting with the most recent, below.

When do Must Be Won draws happen?
Must Be Won draws are held after the jackpot has rolled over five times in a row. In the subsequent draw, the top prize must be won and could roll down to be shared between other winners.
The National Lottery introduced this rollover limit in November 2018 as part of several changes to the prize structure and how the jackpot is capped. Where previously the jackpot could roll over until it hit £22 million, the updated rules were designed to ensure that the top prize was won more regularly, even if no tickets meet the usual winning criteria of matching all six numbers. Here’s how to work out when the next Must Be Won draw might be due:
The jackpot starts at £3.8 million on a Saturday or £2 million on a Wednesday. If nobody wins, the jackpot rolls over.
There is a double rollover if no one matches all six main numbers.
If there are no Match 6 winners, it is a triple rollover.
There is a quadruple rollover if there are still no players in the top Match 6 prize division.
The jackpot rolls over for a fifth time if there are no Match 6 winners.
The jackpot must be won.
Must Be Won draws can also be scheduled to mark key dates or special occasions such as Christmas. On such occasions the jackpot is increased to an advertised amount regardless of what it was worth in the previous draw.
Must Be Won Draws With Two Rounds
As of June 2026, changes were made to the Lotto draws to include an additional round per draw night. This in itself does not impact the way rollovers work, as the jackpot still needs to roll over five consecutive draw nights in order to trigger the Must Be Won draw. A second round will mean that the chances to win a Must Be Won draw are doubled, however there are a combination of outcomes for this.
- If there is a jackpot winner in Round 1 but no jackpot winner in Round 2, the Round 1 winner will receive the full jackpot.
- If there is no jackpot winner in Round 1 but a jackpot winner in Round 2, the Round 2 winner will receive the full jackpot.
- If both Round 1 and Round 2 have a jackpot winner, then the total jackpot amount will be split between the winners.
- If neither Round 1 or Round 2 sees a jackpot winner, then Match 2 players win £5 each with any remaining funds being shared between Match 3 winners.
When a rolldown happens, Match 2 winners are awarded a fixed prize of £5 instead of the usual £1. To make this possible, money is taken from the rolled down jackpot amount. If there are still remaining funds then it will be shared between the Match 3 winners, this amount will vary depending on the jackpot total and the amount of winners.
Lotto Rolldowns
A rolldown is what happens to the jackpot if there are no Match 6 winners in a Must Be Won draw. The top prize is shared between Match 2 winners, and if there are remaining funds, the Match 3 winners will also receive a share.
Match 2 winners receive a fixed £5 prize, unless exceptional circumstances apply. The remaining jackpot prize money is then allocated to Match 3 winners.
If anyone does match all six main numbers in a Must Be Won draw, they win the jackpot as normal and prize amounts in other categories remain the standard amount.
History of the Rolldown and Jackpot Cap
Must Be Won draws have existed in Lotto since the game was launched in 1994, but the rules have changed over time. Previously, National Lottery roll down draws would see the jackpot money shared between only the next tier of prize winners.
The jackpot cap was £22 million before new rules were announced in November 2018. The top prize could then roll one more time after it had reached this mark, before it had to be won in the following draw. If no one matched all six main numbers, the money would be split between ticket holders in the next winning tier.
In the draw on 27th December 2017, for example, a player won £24.5 million by matching just five main numbers plus the Bonus Ball. This was because the jackpot had to be won, and there were no Match 6 winners. Had it not been for this participant, the money would have been split between everyone in the Match 5 tier.
The rules introduced in 2018 saw the jackpot funds distributed to every other prize tier, with a percentage going to each category. This could see Match 3 winners receive around £100.
From June 2026, the rules were updated again so that only Match 2 winners were guaranteed to get an enhanced prize in the event of a rolldown, with Match 3 winners also benefitting if there were funds left over.
