Mystery Ayrshire Winner Claims EuroMillions Jackpot in Time

Last Updated: Wednesday 23rd September 2020, 10:00

Following months of uncertainty over whether the £57 million EuroMillions jackpot from March would be paid out, a winner from South Ayrshire is set to receive the money.

The National Lottery has confirmed that a valid claim was staked before the 180-day deadline, and that it is now in the process of arranging payment to the mystery ticket holder.

No further information will be released about who the lucky entry belongs to unless they decide to go public and share their story. All winners are entitled to stay anonymous.

180-Day Claim Deadline

It has been one of the longest-running claim sagas in National Lottery history, with the final transfer of funds even taking place after the ticket expired on Sunday evening.

Sunday 13th September was the final date to claim for the draw on Tuesday 17th March, as all prizes only remain valid for 180 days. If a winner does not make contact with the National Lottery before this time, they are no longer eligible for any prize their ticket would have been due and the money they would have received is instead given to Good Causes.

While it has now been confirmed that the EuroMillions winner from 17th March did get in touch with lottery officials before the deadline, it has not been revealed when they made their claim. The National Lottery puts every claim through a rigorous validation process to ensure that the rightful winner is paid out.

A claim was lodged back in April, after it had been revealed that the ticket was purchased in South Ayrshire in Scotland. However, the lottery does not comment on the details of individual claims.

Big UK Winners

The latest lucky player joins the ranks of big Scottish winners on EuroMillions. Colin and Christine Weir, from Largs in North Ayrshire, pocketed a jackpot worth £161 million in July 2011.

The record for a UK lottery payout was set just last year when a single ticket matched all the numbers to scoop £170 million on 8th October. They decided to remain anonymous when they came forward.

EuroMillions continues every Tuesday and Friday night, with a couple of special draws coming up as part of the National Lottery’s ‘Big September’.

There will be 20 guaranteed UK millionaires on Friday 18th September thanks to the Millionaire Maker, while a Superdraw on Friday 25th September will raise the jackpot to £115 million.
