National Lottery announce record profits

Last Updated: Wednesday 5th January 2011, 11:09

An announcement from the National Lottery last week shows that the company who run the lottery, and the UK arm of the Euromillions Lottery have recorded record profits for the last six months. Dianne Thompson, new head of the National Lottery released a statement last week reporting £2.7 billion in total sales on the National Lottery and Euromillions Lottery in the six months to September 25th, up 3.6% on the same period last year.

The Lotto has been running in the UK since 1994, but has only recently been acquired by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and so this lottery news, based on sales over the last six months will be welcomed in the National Lottery offices.

This increase in profits is part of a general trend from the Lottery company, who claim to have increased sales by 14% over the last five years, taking the lottery into the realms of some of the biggest lottery draws around the world.

The lottery has tried to broaden its appeal in the last few years with many interactive games and new additions to the format such as the Millionaire Raffle draw from the Euromillions Lottery. Things like the new draws, interactive scratchcards and one of the best online lottery services in the world are setting the National Lottery as a global lottery player.

This and rumours circulating this week about a global lottery draw from Camelot and US Powerball organisers have put the National Lottery firmly on the lottery map. With the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan making no secret of their desire to acquire other lottery draws from around the world, it seems a global lottery could be within reach.
