Scottish Couple Step Forward as Record Lotto Jackpot Winners

Last Updated: Wednesday 13th January 2016, 12:09

As the dust settles on Saturday night’s historic Lotto draw, one of the record jackpot winners has yet to come forward but the other ticket has been claimed. Husband and wife David and Carol Martin were presented with their cheque for just over £33 million at an announcement in Edinburgh on Wednesday morning, and revealed that they now plan to take early retirement and help flood victims.

The couple, both aged 54 and from Hawick in the Scottish Borders, also admitted that they had not looked at their ticket until prompted by a friend on Sunday morning, and were left in ‘total shock’ as they checked their numbers at least ten times to make sure they had won. “We were both stunned into silence. We kept re-checking the numbers as we thought there must be a mistake,” said David during their press conference this morning.

As well as looking forward to having a life without work, the lucky pair also intend to use some of their money to help others. David explained: “ We don’t have all the answers yet but we’d like to help our closest friends and family and there are charities which are important to us too. Parts of our community have also been hit by flooding and we know lots of people who have struggled in recent times so there’s a lot for us to work out but it’s a nice problem to have.”

The biggest Lotto jackpot ever, worth £66,070,646, was won at the weekend as two tickets matched all six main numbers to end a run of 15 rollovers. There were over 4.6 million prize winners on the night following a surge of ticket sales, but the other jackpot winner has not yet made a claim.

All Lotto prizes remain valid for 180 days after the draw and it may just be that the other winning ticket holder is taking their time to digest the news before coming forward, but National Lottery officials have urged everyone who played the game this past weekend to check their tickets. Take a look at the Results section to find out the winning numbers and a full prize breakdown.

There will be another chance for Lotto fans to win great prizes in tonight’s draw, when one player is guaranteed to land a seven-figure sum in the Lotto Millionaire Raffle. The jackpot is also worth £2.4 million, making it a wonderful opportunity for the 4.1 million players who won free Lotto Lucky Dips in Saturday’s draw to try and grab another prize.

If you need to pick up another entry for this evening’s draw, you can visit any authorised retailer in the UK or play online. There is just as much chance of winning tonight as there was on Saturday night, and there is still a life-changing amount of money up for grabs. Best of luck!
