What a Lotto difference fifteen years make

Last Updated: Thursday 7th July 2011, 16:01

If you have been playing the UK Lotto since the start then you cannot fail after fifteen years to be amazed at how many millionaires have been created and just how much lottery money has gone to charity. The National Lottery celebrates its fifteen birthday this week and as part of that we take a look at just how many millionaires have been created and just how much money has been raised for good causes in the UK.

When the National launched back in 1994, the thought of being an instant millionaire just had never been seen in the UK, the biggest thing UK players had ever played for was the football pools but the National Lottery left that in the shade.

Since its launch in 1994, fifteen years ago the UK Lotto has created 2,300 millionaires around the UK, an unbelievable amount and often more than one millionaire has been created every week. Players have won much more than a million too with many players scooping as much as £10 million for a £1 lottery ticket.

And as for good causes, well the amount raised for them has been astronomical, a massive £23 billion raised for good causes around the UK since the launch in 1994. With that sort of cash injected into many projects around the UK it makes you wonder how we ever coped without lottery money in the UK for good causes and charities.

We at National Lottery would like to raise our glasses and give a big toast to the UK Lotto and all the good it has done since its launch.
