Canada Lotto 6/49
Canada's Lotto 6/49 is drawn in Toronto on Wednesdays and Saturdays just after 11:05pm ET and offers players a jackpot of at least CA$5 million alongside a Guaranteed Prize Draw award of CA$1 million. Results appear on the Lotto 6/49 Results page soon after the draw takes place so you can find out how your tickets have fared without having to wait around.
Lotto 6/49 underwent a transformation in September 2013, with the introduction of the Guaranteed Prize Draw and a new winning tier, which means that anyone who matches two main numbers correctly will win a Free Play prize.
How to Play Lotto 6/49
Players pay CA$3 for each line and pick six numbers from a choice of 49, matching them all to win the jackpot. After the six main numbers are drawn, a Bonus Number is selected which increases the value of your prize if you match it alongside two or five main numbers.
Every line played on Lotto 6/49 entitles the ticket holder to an entry into the Guaranteed Prize Draw, for which a ten-digit code is automatically generated and displayed on your ticket. The code must be matched exactly with the one drawn on the night in order to claim the CA$1 million prize and at least one player will win in every draw. On occasion, special draws may be held in which more prizes of $1 million are made available.
Lotto 6/49 Prizes
The minimum Lotto 6/49 jackpot stands at CA$5 million, but can quickly increase in value due to rollovers. The game has no rollover limit or jackpot cap, so it will keep rolling until someone matches all six main numbers, meaning that there is the potential for players to win huge prizes. The biggest Lotto 6/49 jackpot recorded came on Saturday 17th October 2015 when Zhe Wang of Mississauga, Ontario won CA$64 million, eventually collecting her winnings the following March.
Lotto 6/49 has seven prize tiers in total, allowing players to win cash amounts for matching anything from two main numbers upwards. Here are the details of the tiers, prizes and the odds of winning within each on a single play:
|Balls Matched||Pari-Mutuel Prize Allocation||Odds of Winning|
|6||79.5% of the prize fund||1:13,983,816|
|5 + Bonus||6% of the prize fund||1:2,330,636|
|5||5% of the prize fund||1:55,492|
|4||9.5% of the prize fund||1:1,033|
|2 + Bonus||CA$5 guaranteed||1:81.2|
|2||Free Play guaranteed||1:8.3|
|Odds of winning any prize:||1:6.6|
The prizes for matching four or more balls are dependent on ticket sales and the number of winners in that tier, with the allocated portion of the prize fund split equally between the winners.
The odds of winning in the Guaranteed Prize Draw are entirely dependent on how many people have bought tickets for that draw.
Each of the different provinces which play Lotto 6/49 offer additional games you can enter whilst you are buying your ticket for the main draw. Each of these games offers more chances to win big prizes for a small fee.
These add-ons include Encore in Ontario, which has a top prize of $1 million for exactly matching a seven-digit code, with 21 other prizes distributed for matching different combinations of the numbers. British Columbia has Extra, in which players must match four automatically generated numbers in order to win CA$500,000, Quebec's Extra game requires seven numbers to be matched to win CA$1 million and Western Canada's draw with the same name has a top prize of CA$250,000. The Atlantic Lottery's additional game is Atlantic Tag and costs CA$1 for the chance to win CA$100,000 by matching a six-digit code in the exact order in which it is drawn.
