Bin Men Swap Sausage Rolls for Scratchcard Win

Last Updated: Friday 2nd September 2016, 12:26

Two bin men from County Down have gained a prize of £70,000 after swapping out a sausage roll habit for a big scratchcard win. Stephen Inglis and Frank McCormick, from Bangor, won the top prize on the Jewel 7’s Doubler game late last month - and it’s all thanks to Frank’s new diet.

The pair, who have been working together for nine years, always listen to the morning radio quiz to try and see who could correctly answer the most questions. In the past, the loser had to buy the morning’s sausage rolls. However, when Frank decided that it was time to reduce his waistline, both he and Stephen switched to buying scratchcards instead.

One morning, Stephen had to buy the scratchcard. After taking it back to their lorry, he had Frank scratch the cover off the card: “He said to me that we had a lucky 7 in one of the rows. Then, after a pause, he said ‘we’ve won 70, we’ve won 70’.” When Stephen asked him if he meant £70, Frank responded: “No, 70 thousand’!

The pair quickly phoned lottery officials to confirm the win, and even though the good news hasn’t really sunk in yet for the pair, both of them are truly thrilled. Stephen has planned a special meal out with his children to celebrate and will take some time to think about how to spend his half of the winnings, while Frank is ready to splash out on a new car and a family visit to Disneyland Paris.

Frank has vouched for the success of his diet, telling lottery officials that “on one hand, I’ve lost 28 pounds, but on the other I’ve gained 35 thousand!” If you’re inspired to see a few pounds fly off the scale while adding even more pounds to your bank balance, why not check out the National Lottery scratchcards on sale near you?
