How to Play Lotto
Lotto players must pick six main numbers between 1 and 59, matching at least two to win a prize and all six to claim the multimillion-pound jackpot. A seventh ball, known as the Bonus Ball, is drawn from the same pool, and increases the winnings for those who match it along with five of the main numbers.
Lotto draws take place on Saturday and Wednesday nights and can be viewed live on YouTube. Wednesday draws take place at 8.30pm, and Saturday Lotto draws take place at 7.45pm. Saturday Lotto results are also revealed on television, at 8.15pm on ITV1. Winning numbers appear on the Lottery Results page soon afterwards.
Those who play Lotto online receive an email notification if they have won a prize, whereas those who buy their tickets from authorised retailers must keep them safe and remember to check them against the draw results. Lotto prizes expire 180 days after the winning draw, and you can find out information on how to receive your awards from both online and physical tickets at the Lottery Claims page.
Players who play Lotto at authorised retailers are advised to sign the back of their ticket as proof of ownership in case they lose their ticket.
Methods of Checking Your Lotto Tickets
How to Win Lotto
A player who matches all six main Lotto numbers wins the jackpot, or a share of it if more than one ticket holder plays the correct winning line. The minimum match required to win a Lotto prize is two main numbers, which entitles players to a free Lotto Lucky Dip. For online players, this ticket is automatically entered into the next Lotto draw, whereas those who win on a physical ticket can choose between entering either the following Saturday or Wednesday draw.
The prize for matching three main numbers is fixed at £25, with all larger awards dependent on how many other winners there are in the same tier and how many tickets were sold for that draw. The jackpot can be boosted by rollovers up to an amount set in advance by the National Lottery.
See the Lotto Prizes page for more information on what you can win and the odds of claiming a prize.
