£20.9 Million Lotto Jackpot Sparks Excitement

Last Updated: Wednesday 15th June 2016, 11:38 am

Lotto fans will be hoping for a healthy dose of lottery luck this evening as every ticket holder aims to get their hands on a jackpot worth £20.9 million. If won, the jackpot, which is currently worth more than that of EuroMillions, will become the fifth-largest prize on a single ticket that has ever been claimed since Lotto’s debut in 1994.

Since Lotto’s most recent renovation in October 2015, jackpot totals have increased dramatically, with five top prize winners scooping sums in excess of £10 million this year alone, a total that would only climb higher should a potential winner be found tonight. Before the turn of the year, the record for the largest Lotto prize won on a single ticket stood at £22.5 million, a feat achieved by business partners Paul Maddison and Mark Gardiner from St Leonards-on-Sea when they hit the jackpot on the 10th June 1995. This milestone stood for over two decades before being shattered twice in a matter of months, first by a ticket holder who claimed a £32.5 million prize on Saturday 13th February and then by a second Lotto fan who scooped a massive £35.1 million reward on Wednesday 6th April.

Tonight’s prize, although not yet large enough to trouble the business partners who won big in 1995, would see any potential winner remove Iris Jeffrey from fifth place on the table of Lotto’s biggest-ever prize winners. The housewife from Belfast secured a jackpot of £20.1 million in July 2004 and has occupied a place in the top quintet ever since. However, with this latest prize growing ever larger, her time in this select club is nearing its end.

Lotto fans may have cause to be optimistic ahead of this evening, with Wednesday draws having proved a happy hunting ground this year. Five of the nine jackpot victories in 2016 have occurred midweek, while Wednesday wins are responsible for all four of the most recent successes, a pleasing fact for any players hoping that tonight is their night to win big.

For your chance to win an amazing prize this evening, Lotto tickets can be purchased online or from any authorised retailer throughout the UK. Best of luck and keep those fingers crossed!
