£21 Million Lotto Ticket Was Left in a Handbag for a Week After Win

Last Updated: Wednesday 23rd September 2020, 16:05

A couple that won a £21 million Lotto jackpot have said that they only found out about their win a week after the draw took place. Donna Stickley checked the winning ticket after finding it in her handbag while on a shopping trip and was shocked to discover that it was worth an eight-figure sum.

At first, she thought the win was for £2 million and it was only after her husband, David, checked it himself that they discovered it was worth more than ten times that amount. "My other half called me at work,” said Mr. Stickley. “She said, ‘I’ve checked on the internet and I think we may have won £2m but it just doesn't look right’. I told her to go and double check again as things like this don't happen to people like us. She sent me a text with the amount on it from the internet but she had read the amount wrong - it wasn’t £2m, it was £21m.”

The Stickleys’ jackpot win was the biggest of the year so far, exceeding the £18 million won by the Banfield family in February. Mrs. Stickley works as an office manager at an engineering company and Mr. Stickley as an aircraft refueller at Babcock International. Despite their windfall, both say they will continue working. “We are normal people. We do not want dramatic change. We are just going to try and comprehend what has happened,” said Mr. Stickley.

David and Donna Stickley have been together for 20 years and were married in March this year. They intend to spend some of their winnings on a honeymoon, as well as a new luxury sports car and to take care of elderly relatives.

The couple matched six numbers in the Lotto draw on 12th May to land a jackpot of £21,044,592, which had rolled over for ten consecutive draws. The winning numbers were 1, 15, 21, 30, 35, and  44. The win also marked the 5,000th millionaire made by the National Lottery.

Two Lotto Winners on Saturday 26th May

Another Lotto jackpot, worth £9,207,610, was won on Saturday 26th May - the first jackpot win since the Stickleys’. Two tickets shared the prize to take home £4,603,805 each, but as yet no details of the winners have been revealed. The winning numbers from Saturday’s draw were 9, 14, 19, 29, 39, and 40, with Bonus Ball 3. One Millionaire Raffle code was also drawn - ROSE 6708 8878.

The Lotto jackpot resets to £1.8 million for the draw on Wednesday 30th May, but if you want to set your sights higher than this, there’s a huge £57 million jackpot on offer in Tuesday’s EuroMillions draw. The top prize has rolled over five times since it was last won on 8th May. Take part by buying a ticket from authorised retailers in any of the participating countries or join an online syndicate to improve your chances of winning.
