Accrington Syndicate Jackpot

A thirteen-strong Lotto syndicate in Accrington won a jackpot of £3,938,641 on Saturday 28 February, 2009. The syndicate of workers and ex-workers at A S K Rewinds Ltd has been playing the Lotto since 1999 and enters the same numbers every week. The numbers that made the players rich were 6, 25, 33, 37, 42 and 43.
The leader of the syndicate, retired 79 year old Arthur Whitaker, has always had a feeling that the syndicate would win, but when they finally managed to match the jackpot-winning lottery results he was as shocked as anyone, as his son Andy, who also belongs to the syndicate, explains:
“Dad is a great syndicate leader and watches the Lotto draw every Saturday night. He’s always been convinced that we’d win – but when he rang me on Saturday night I was in shock! Mum said he raced into the lounge, wearing his string vest and started dancing around – which I can just imagine!”
Arthur is the oldest member of the syndicate and the youngest is 23 years of age. When Arthur started telling them all that they had won the National Lottery jackpot after nearly a decade of trying, many of the members thought that he was joking, and he had to show them the ticket to prove that the good news was true.
“The win has come at such a great time for us all as it means that we can breathe a sigh of relief financially.” Andy said. “Everyone is absolutely over the moon and we’ve received nothing but well wishes from all our customers, friends and family – it’s a dream come true!”
Now that the credit crunch has been put firmly in its place thanks to the £3.9 million jackpot (which equates to over £300,000 per member) the players are beginning to draw up their shopping lists. New cars, holidays and home improvements are all popular choices, and there will also be plenty of money set aside for a rainy day.
